Veterinary Management of Equine Reproduction: "Dirty" Mares

Since people may want to breed mares that have issues that indicate they may be hard to breed, as a breeder, you need to determine what steps can be taken to minimize infertility. Dirty mares natually tend to get infections a little easier in their reproductive tracts. Some of them do not. However, infected mares, referred to as “dirty mares” are at risk for inflamation of the endometrium, or the lining of the uterus. Since this is where early pregnancies take place, you need to take care of any inflammation or infection. They may have acute infections endometritis, they may have long term uterine infections or they may be mares who get persistent mating-induced endometritis. Keeping the mare (and stallion) clean and correct hygiene is invaluable. Timing the breeding to a single mating is best.

Since the vulva is the first defense against infection, they need to be full and firm and meeting in the middle. There has to be 80% of her opening of the vulva below the line of her pelvis. If the seal does not work, the vagina can suck in air and contamination may occur. Simply getting vaginitus, may start a larger infection. The anus needs to be out further than the lips of the vulva. If the anus is sunken in, it may get the mare dirty.
