Veterinary Management of Equine Reproduction: Collecting from a Stallion

There are a few very important safety features to keep in mind when collecting a stallion. You can use a phantom mare which makes the risk of using a live mare nonexistent. You can pad it, and make it adjustable or of a good height and width for the stallion if making it yourself. It should be padded, with foam mattresses, especially at the end. You should pad the section and make sure it is covered with something like canvas, but it should not be a material that is man made and can cause friction or slippage. Carpets and rugs are also good. The rear end should be lower than the rump of a mare it would actively cover. The stallion should be well handled with lead ropes and a twitch or stud chain if necessary. The phantom mare should be properly sanitized between uses.
Disposable liners should be used for the stallion to deposit semen. In cold weather, it should be warmed and insulated. The penis should be manually deflected to avoid damage and it should be retrieved before he moves onto the phantom. The AV should be handled properly, with the penis directed into it and he should breed it. Do not force it. Care must be taken to make sure the stallion is going well during the process and it does not aggravate him. When the stallion flags, ensure the semen is collected properly, and the AV handler should ensure that the ejaculate drains into the collection bottle. Do not rush the stallion to dismount. Handle him carefully at all times and practice safe procedures for everyone involved.
You should know your stallion's preferences and be prepared to move at all times. The penis should never be handled roughly and he should only be manually stimulated if he is comfortable with the process. Stallions need to be properly trained in the process of collection. You also need to be prepared, by dressing for the part with boots, jeans, vest, helmets or more. By having a team of at least three people, you can handle the stallion and you are better prepared to work with him.
